St. Kilda, a jewelry company I have admired for the past two years, is having an online sample sale. Click here to visit their site and see all the gorgeous jewelry that is on sale—my picks are the mini heart necklace pictured above and this peace ring. Also be sure to check out the many pieces that are part of their regular collection. My collection favourite is the loved ring.
I have posted about Pyrrha’s wax seal pendants before, but had only admired from afar. Today I was able to see some in person and they do not disappoint. The fidelity pendant, which reads fidele en absence, is one of my personalfavourites. You can explore the image gallery here to find out what each one means.
Last June, I posted about the “I Heart California” necklace, created by tru.che on Etsy. Well, I was pretty disappointed to read this piece when I woke up this morning. Urban Outfitters has completely ripped off tru.che’s original design! A few horrible things:
1. Of course, they gave her no credit of the design, which means she doesn’t make a dime from her own design! This is ridiculous, because as you may know, Urban Outfitters has hosted design collaborations in the past. One such example was a ring collaboration with BLEACH BLACK, so they could have approached tru.che if they liked her design so much.
2. Not only did they rip off her design, but they offered it at a lower price point; her original pieces sell for about $50, which UO has their pieces listed at $19. Although the quality of the UO piece probably does not hold a candle to the original, it offers a significant price drop, which many people would find appealing. This could significantly affect her business and sales. In addition, the artist wrote about how the popularity of this line is what allowed to her to quit her job and focus on making jewelry full-time; that could now be in jeopardy.
I hope people will support tru.che and if this story gets enough attention, UO might be forced to discontinue and drop this line.
ETA: Urban Outfitters responded here. While they deny copying the necklace, I think the tone of their press release is far too aggressive. With their long, well-documented history of ripping off other designers, they should tread carefully.
Pyrrha created this wax seal necklace in Vancouver, BC. It is a rebus, which uses pictures in place of words. This one is: “bear picture + AND + FOR + bear picture”= “bear and forbear”. This is said to “represent perseverance in times of trouble”. Check it out on Pyrrha’s website.
The necklace I made today. Skull, lava beads, green bead and a bit of pyrite on a leather cord.
Tiny initial pendant. From Mon Cadeau on Etsy.
